Councillor Ian Grant, Conservative Group Leader on West Lancs Borough Council, said: “Lady Thatcher was a towering figure in British politics. After being elected in 1979, she paved the way for councils like West Lancashire to offer council tenants the right to buy their own home – expanding opportunity for thousands of local residents. She also introduced reforms which ensured councils got the best value for taxpayers by offering businesses the chance to work in partnership to deliver public services. These changes have withstood the test of time, and have largely been accepted by the Labour Party – that will be her real legacy.”
Councillor Ruth Melling, Chairman of West Lancashire Conservative Association, said: “Lady Thatcher inspired generations of people, some of whom now serve as Conservative Councillors in West Lancashire, and those who work tirelessly in a voluntary role for the Conservative cause in West Lancashire year in and year out. As the longest serving Prime Minister of the 20th Century and our first woman Prime Minister, she believed in the power of the individual and freedom. She never abandoned her core beliefs and principles even in the face of adversity. A truly remarkable woman.”
