Mike Prendergast is our parliamentary candidate for the forthcoming General Election.
He stood in the West Lancashire by-election in February 2023 following Rosie Cooper’s resignation. Unlike our current MP, who stood in Southend in 2017 & 2019, West Lancashire is Mike’s first choice and he has not been parachuted in from another part of the country.
Mike is a local solicitor and runs his own business right here in West Lancashire and has done so for the last 16 years. Mike is the married father of 2 young children, both born at Ormskirk hospital, and his wife is a teacher.
Originally from Liverpool, Mike is also an experienced local councillor playing an active role in local politics and campaigning on a range of issues including improving Children’s Social Services and holding underperforming Labour run council services to account.
Mike has been an active fundraiser for local charities, raising almost £200,000 over the years for West Lancashire based charities including Ormskirk Civic Hall, Twinkle House in Skelmersdale and the Neo Natal Unit at Ormskirk Hospital to name but a few. Mike has also run the London Marathon to help raise funds for Whizzkidz and Mencap and run the Great North Run to raise money for the National Autistic Society.
Outside of work, politics and his charity work, Mike enjoys running, occasionally playing golf, helping coach his children’s football team and, most importantly, spending time with his wife and children.
After over 30 years of Labour in West Lancashire, Mike wants to change the fortunes of West Lancashire and deliver on some of the major issues facing West Lancashire. Mike’s key priorities are:
-
Campaign for Lower Taxes for Families and Businesses – The Autumn Statement saw the biggest tax cuts in a generation, by focussing on reducing inflation, reducing debt and growing the economy we can cut taxes further and put more money back in your pocket.
-
Keep West Lancashire Rural – Labour’s plans could ignore local people and see huge swathes of our beautiful Lancashire countryside turned into building sites. We need development that is right for our area, taking your views into account.
-
Deliver Investment – For too long successive Labour MP’s in West Lancashire have promised investment in road and rail infrastructure but have failed to deliver. Talk is cheap, Mike will deliver real investment and real change.
-
Grow Our Local Economy – As someone who actually runs a business in West Lancashire, Mike knows our area has great people and great potential and he will work with businesses to bring more private investment into West Lancashire to grow our local economy.
-
Tackle Anti-Social Behaviour and Rural Crime – Our towns and suburbs should be safe to walk at night and local farmers should not have to worry about vehicle and machinery theft. Mike will work with local police to tackle these issues and build on the work of our Police & Crime Commissioner.
-
Invest in Our NHS – We’ve seen record investment in our NHS and Mike wants to see this continue, with more Doctors & Nurses working here in West Lancashire. Both of Mike’s children were born at Ormskirk Hospital, members of his family work in the NHS and he knows how important our NHS is to local people.
