Cllr Paul Greenall (Derby Ward and West Lancs Conservative Group Deputy Leader) along with Thomas Burton (Derby Ward Candidate for 2016) and Edward McCarthy (Knowsley Ward Candidate for 2016) went to a talk on the Northern Powerhouse and Cultural Policy by Dr Ben Walmsley (University of Leeds) at Edge Hill University.
The talk investigated the Northern Powerhouse concept from the perspective of the arts. It explored how cultural policy and arts funding decisions are made, both in theory and in practice, and discussed tensions between funding priorities.
Edward McCarthy said “The talk was very informative. Evenings like this at Edge Hill University are open to the public and I would recommend them. The Conservatives in West Lancashire are meeting with James Wharton MP the Minister for the Northern Powerhouse in February next year and we are also meeting with the Transport Minister Patrick McLoughlin MP in 2016. The Northern Powerhouse is a vital project and it is important West Lancashire can share in any benefits whether it be in relation to the arts, transport or the economy. Transport issues such as the reopening of the Burscough curves, traffic problems in Ormskirk and the lack of a train station in Skelmersdale need to be addressed so we can benefit from the Northern Powerhouse."
