Councillors have been lobbying hard to retain the Abbey Lane facility in Burscough and the Glenburn Road site in Skelmersdale, both of which were looked at as part of a county-wide review. The initial proposals are to keep them, and a final decision will be made after the consultation process has finished on September 30.
Burscough West Conservative Borough Cllr Jason Grice said: "I am pleased County Council recognises the importance of the Burscough site. In their report, they rightly point out that it is conveniently situated and, following the closure of the recycling centre at Rufford, will be receiving even more waste than the 5,451 tonnes it does currently.
"Both my Conservative colleague, County Cllr William Cropper, and I are fighting hard on this issue and promise to continue the battle to keep it open."Speaking about the Skelmersdale site, Skelmersdale East Conservative County Cllr Carolyn Evans said:"Skelmersdale household waste recycling centre is the busiest in West Lancashire. The site is well used by people in Skelmersdale, Up Holland, Lathom, Parbold, Wrightington and Newburgh and is strategically important.
"I urge everyone to have their say on the proposals before the September 30 deadline."To have your say, visit www.lancashire.gov.uk/waste, email [email protected] or write to Jo Turton, Executive Director, Waste Management Group, Lancs County Council, PO Box 78, County Hall, Preston, PR1 8XJ, before 5pm on September 30.
