A NEW super-fast broadband network in Lancashire is set to play a key role in securing economic recovery and growth across the county.
The bold move from Conservative Lancashire County Council will create a new countywide super-fast broadband network by 2014.
It will help to stimulate activity in rural areas, increase business productivity and attract investment into Lancashire from UK-based and international companies.
The county council will use a competitive process to select a partner to deliver the ambitious project.
The landmark plan will ensure that Lancashire is recognised among the leading councils in the UK for super-fast broadband.
County Councillor Geoff Driver, Conservative leader of the county council, said: "Lancashire County Council is aiming to lead the county into a bright new future. We want to open up opportunities for businesses in Lancashire, by establishing a super-fast broadband network.
"It is important for the county council to encourage business, create jobs and develop a sustainable and growing economy. This will help people, especially in rural or deprived areas, to connect in new ways with the rest of Lancashire and the wider world."
Super-fast broadband describes a combination of infrastructure and technology that delivers very high speed broadband access, allowing businesses and domestic customers to benefit from a range of information, education, entertainment and business services.
Some funding will come from the county council, with funding also being sought from other partners and the private sector.
As well as benefits for business, improved Internet access will provide West Lancashire’s residents with a host of new services and assist in raising overall quality of life.
It is likely to use a range of technology to suit urban and rural areas, with a private sector partner working with the county council to deliver the best solutions.
The aim is to create a countywide network by 2014.
Conservative Borough Cllr Adrian Owens, who has responsibility for Regeneration and Estates in West Lancashire warmly welcomed the announcement. He said, "The best broadband will give our area a competitive advantage, retaining and attracting good jobs in West Lancashire."
