Car Parks.
Works are programmed to start the week beginning Monday 9 February and should take approximately two months to complete.
The improvements will be carried out at the following car parks:
· Hants Lane
· The Stiles, Derby Street West
· Hutton Way, off Park Road
· Market Way, off Moorgate
· Park Road (to the rear of Tesco)
The improvements will see these car parks re-surfaced, with new lining for spaces put down. Car park signage will also be replaced on all Borough Council car parks in Ormskirk town centre.
Councillor David Griffiths, portfolio holder for Town and Village Centres, said: “Money raised from parking charges helps the Council maintain and improve its car parks. I am really pleased that these works are taking place to maintain and improve the parking facilities in Ormskirk. These measures along with the recently-approved changes to parking arrangements on our car parks will ensure they are in the best condition for shoppers and visitors, which in turn will benefit local businesses.”
During the course of the works it will be necessary at times to close individual car parks for a short period in order that the surfacing and lining element of the works can take place. Appropriate signage will be in place in advance of these times to advise car park users.
Parking charges will not increase as a result of the works. For more information on car parks in Ormskirk town centre please visit www.westlancs.gov.uk/parking.
Moor Street.
With work about to get underway on the exciting project to refresh one of the main shopping streets in Ormskirk some market stalls will have a new home for the next few months.
The scheme will see the pedestrianised section of Moor Street, from Moorgate to the Clock Tower, resurfaced with new paving to complement that used on Aughton Street and Church Street. There will also be new seating and tree planting, and a revised layout to better present the market stalls.
This project is being delivered in partnership between Lancashire County Council and West Lancashire Borough Council and aims to make the area even more appealing for businesses, shoppers and visitors.
Work is due to begin on Monday 16 February and is expected to last until September. This means that from Thursday 19 February – until the works are completed – some market stalls that are normally on Moor Street on Thursdays and Saturdays will be based on the Ormskirk Bus Station car park.
Market traders normally based on Aughton Street will be unaffected by the works and traders on Moor Street will be given the chance to use vacant stalls there.
As the project encompasses the pedestrianised area between the clock tower and Moorgate, a few Moor Street stalls will remain on the street during the works. The butcher and the fishmonger will still be on Moor Street, but they will be moved to a different position.
To accommodate the stalls being moved the Bus Station car park will be closed to the public from approximately 5.30pm on the evenings before market days. It will re-open at approximately 7pm on market days once stalls have been removed, and operate as normal on other days.
Market trading times remain the same during the works. For more information on Ormskirk Market please visit www.westlancs.gov.uk/market.
Councillor David Westley, Leader of West Lancashire Borough Council, said: “This scheme will be a fantastic boost for Ormskirk town centre and will bring many benefits for businesses, market traders, shoppers and visitors. The market is a vital part of Ormskirk and we are really pleased we have been able to find a temporary base for some traders during the project so they can keep working and shoppers can continue visiting the stalls.”
Throughout the works, Moor Street will be closed to all traffic but pedestrian access to the shops will be maintained. The direction of the current one way systems in place on Church Street and Moorgate will be reversed while Moor Street is closed.
