Give an older person a silver service welcome on Sunday 5 October.
Silver Sunday provides older people with an opportunity to get out of the house, try new things and meet new people in an effort to combat the loneliness and isolation felt by many older people.
Silver Sunday was launched in 2012 by The Sir Simon Milton Foundation and Councillor Christabel Flight, Westminster City Council’s Older People’s Champion. In 2013, the day went national and saw over 180 events take place across the country in support of Silver Sunday.
Councillor May Blake, West Lancashire Borough Council Older People’s Champion, is offering small grants from her Older People’s Champion’s Fund to people who want to organise events for older people on this special day.
Councillor Blake said: “Older people have a lot to offer their community but many feel lonely. Silver Sunday is an important and fun initiative which gives them something to look forward to and helps ease that loneliness.”
Alex McMinn, who is Chairman of the West Lancs Ageing Well Forum and also a director of the national Silver Line helpline that provides 24-hour phone contact for lonely older people said: “Silver Sunday is an opportunity for older people to get together and try new things. I hope local people and community organisations will take the chance to get involved, apply for a small grant and organise an event to help make Silver Sunday a success for older people in West Lancashire."
