They opposed Conservative proposals which would see eligible residents in the Egerton, Ennerdale, Enstone, Elmridge, Elmstead and Elswick areas have first pick of the new £1.7m homes. The idea is to intergrate the new homes into the existing community.
Conservative housing chief Cllr Val Hopley said: "I was surprised that Labour councillors voted against the plan at Thursday night's Executive Overview & Scrutiny Committee.
"These are the first council homes built in West Lancs for 15 years, delivered by Conservative-controlled West Lancs Borough Council, and we felt it right that local residents who are eligible to apply for them should be able to do so.
"The reason why we support the change in our allocation policy is that we believe that it is important to sustain local communities and that this will help integrate the new build into the existing community.
"The local link will only be for the initial lettings. Should any properties remain unallocated then they will be advertised through Home finder and allocated in the normal manner. All future allocations will also comply with the normal allocations policy.
"Labour were dead against this and shown themselves to be a party who do not believe in local homes for local people."
