Labour has taken control of West Lancashire Borough Council for the first time since 2002 following the local elections.There were 18 council seats up for grabs in 2015. Labour took 11 seats, while the Conservatives took seven, giving Labour 30 seats and the Conservatives 23 seats overall and 1 Independent.
This year turnout was 69.18% compared to a turnout of 65.87% in 2010, the last time that local elections coincided with the General Election. Last year the turnout for the local election was 35.97%
Conservative Leader David Westley said: “It’s obviously been a very disappointing night and day for the Conservatives locally. Nationally there’s a sense of euphoria in the Conservative camp, but not here."
“However we will rally and the next local election is only 12 months away.”
In relation to the General Election, Rosie Cooper was declared MP for West Lancashire after doubling her majority.
The final results were Labour: 24,474, Conservative: 16,114, Liberal Democrat: 1,298, UKIP: 6,058, Green, 1582, War Veterans Pro-traditional Family Party: 150.
