West Lancashire Community Safety Partnership wants to welcome new students to Edge Hill University and ensure they have a safe and enjoyable time living in the borough. The partnership’s annual Freshers’ Week programme will start in earnest when students arrive for the first week of term on Sunday, 22 September.
Many aspects of the Partnership’s coordinated activities will extend into weeks two and three when returning students come back. Some initiatives will also aim to ensure the new academic year passes peacefully for people living in Ormskirk. These include the Silent Students Happy Homes (SSHH) campaign which was expanded last year to cover more areas of town.
The campaign aims to reduce complaints of anti-social behaviour and noise nuisance by encouraging students to respect their neighbours. It involves dedicated students using their own time to walk along St Helens Road and Ruff Lane late at night in a bid to ensure areas around the campus are quiet. If anyone is loud, the student volunteers will ask them to consider the local residents and to keep it down.
Dave Tilleray, West Lancashire Community Safety Partnership chairman, said: “We would like to welcome the new students to Edge Hill. We appreciate members of the community are concerned that there can be some anti-social behaviour during the first few weeks of term. The Community Safety Partnership has been working hard to ensure plans are in place to reduce anti-social behaviour, keep students safe and help them successfully integrate into their new lives.”
Councillor David Sudworth, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety and Derby Ward Cllr said: “I am pleased the Community Safety Partnership will be taking action during Freshers’ Week once again. It is traditionally a busy time in Ormskirk, and it's important students enjoy themselves but stay safe and act in a considerate and neighbourly manner.”
West Lancashire Community Safety Partnership includes West Lancashire Borough Council, Lancashire Police, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, Lancashire County Council and Lancashire Probation Trust.
