If you are aged between 12 and 19 and fancy some free football then come to the Wigan Athletic Community Trust Football 4 All sessions at Glenburn Sports College.
Boys and girls and young men and women aged under 19 can come along and every Wednesday between 6pm and 8pm. All abilities can be catered for at the sessions, and those taking part could also play in competitions against other Premier League and football League teams that run similar schemes.
The aim is to encourage more young people to participate in sport, get involved in positive activities and steer them away from youth nuisance and anti-social behaviour.
West Lancashire Community Safety Partnership has worked with the community trust to set up the sessions. There will also be opportunities for volunteers to gain valuable experience by helping to organise the sessions, and to train for official FA qualifications.
For more information on the activities, which have been funded by Sport England Small Grants, please call Tom Drake on 01942 488530, email [email protected] or visit the Wigan Athletic Community Trust website.
Dave Tilleray, Chairman on the West Lancashire Community Safety Partnership, said: “I am really pleased the Community Safety Partnership has been able to help secure funding for these new sessions which will help get more young people involved in sport and cut down on anti-social behaviour.”
These new evenings are an extension of the Kicks Soccer Project which aimed to stop young people getting involved in crime and anti-social behaviour. Funded through the Home Office, this scheme has more than 100 children aged between eight and 17 regularly enjoy football activities with coaches from Wigan Athletic Community Trust at Skelmersdale Fire Station and the Evermoor Hub.
Skelmersdale Action for Youth (SAY) offered activities to run alongside the sessions. A group of the youngsters represented Wigan Athletic against Everton and 24 of them attended competitions against other kicks projects in Wigan.
