The Conservative-controlled West Lancashire Borough Council from early Monday have allocated additional staff and sent in diggers to remove packed ice and snow from pedestrian areas in Ormskirk Town Centre.
Meanwhile, Conservative-controlled Lancashire County Council have been gritting and moving snow on local strategic roads.
Ian Grant, Conservative Group Leader on West Lancashire Borough Council, said: "This is one of the worst winters on record and as local Conservatives, we are pulling out all the stops by working alongside our colleagues at County Hall to keep West Lancashire on the move. The County Council are responsible for the roads but at times like this we are doing what we can to help especially in the town centres.
"We put extra money aside especially to deal with situations such as this and as a result, large amounts of snow and ice have been removed from the pedestrian area around Ormskirk Clock Tower, including Moor Street and Aughton Street. Gritting has been taking place, for example, in the town centre and The Stiles car park. These are difficult times for the businesses in Ormskirk who need a successful trading period up to Christmas
"The strategic road network around our two main urban towns - Ormskirk and Skelmersdale - are moving well and passable with care. These include Moor Street, Stanley Street, Park Road, St Helens Road and Derby Street West.
"In Skelmersdale, the main roads such as Northway, Southway, Houghtons Road, Glenburn Road, Neverstitch Road and Railway Road are open and passable with care.
"With temperatures this low, no amount of gritting or snow clearing can make any road 100% safe and I would urge motorists to exercise care when using all roads. However much salt is put down it becomes of little use if temperatures plummet. We are having daily planning meetings to ensure that Council staff are assigned to the most appropriate tasks during this winter weather period "
