Councillors on West Lancs Borough Council staged a mass walk out at last week's Full Council Meeting but only after the conclusion of the Council's business. The protest was against the ruling Labour Group's abuse of the democratic process and the waste of resources in tabling multiple yet pointless motions purely for narrow party political ends.
The Conservative Leader, Cllr David Westley, said; "Labour had put 6 Motions on the Council's Agenda, 5 of which had nothing to do with the Council's business but were simply there to give them the opportunity to attack Government Policy. The Motions were absolutely pointless as, after 2 or 3 hours of listening to vitriolic socialist claptrap, the outcome sought was to force the Chief Executive to write multiple letters to the Government. The Conservative protest was against the involvement of the Chief Executive in party politics and the absolute waste of considerable council officer time."
Cllr Westley, continued; "It is my firm belief that Motions should be relevant to the Council's business such as the one we tabled earlier this year that sought to reverse Labour's deeply unpopular £30 Green Wheelie Bin Tax and stopping collections at the end of October. Such Motions should seek a meaningful outcome and not just be used as an opportunity to stage a meaningless political debate and the writing of a pointless letter to the Government."
