A charity volunteer who supports adults with disabilities in West Lancashire has been selected as the Conservative candidate for Ormskirk's Scott Ward at next year's Borough Council elections.
Edward McCarthy, 31, will be fighting the seat currently held by Conservative Councillor and former Council Chairman Cyril Ainscough, who is retiring from the Borough Council after 16 years of distinguished service spanning the past three decades.
Edward, an ex Ormskirk Grammar School and Edge Hill student, works as a support worker for adults with learning difficulties and has, for many years, volunteered on holidays for children with diabetes. He is also a charity director for a group supporting adults with learning difficulties to participate in sports.
Edward, a qualified teacher, said: "I am delighted to have been chosen as the Conservative candidate for Scott Ward, and am already working hard in the area by tackling issues such as graffiti on Marians Drive, vandalism on Tyrer Road and litter on Scott Drive. I've had a terrific response from Scott Ward residents and look forward to getting stuck in over the next six months."
Conservative Group Leader Cllr Ian Grant said: "I would like to thank Cyril for his distinguished service to West Lancashire in the 16 years he has been on the council. Cyril worked tirelessly with his wife Maureen while he was Chairman of the Council to raise considerable monies for charities for the benefit of West Lancashire. He has made a valuable contribution and I wish him all the best for his retirement.
"I know that in Edward, we have someone who will, if elected, be a conscientious and hardworking councillor for the people of Scott Ward who will carry on Cyril's good work."
