West Lancashire Borough Council tenants who have ideas to improve the environment in their area can apply for funding to help their schemes.
The Council’s Environmental Improvement Budget is a pot of money intended for projects put forward by people living in Council accommodation that can help improve their surroundings.
A number of tenants have already made successful bids and delivered some great projects. Overgrown and unsightly shrub beds in Ashurst, Birch Green, Digmoor, Little Digmoor, Tanhouse and Up Holland have been replanted with new shrubs and bulbs. The addition of an owl carving from a tree stump has enhanced an area of Claybrow and new fencing has been installed at bungalows in Holland Moor and Ormskirk. Sheltered Housing Schemes in Burscough and Tarleton have benefitted from increased parking spaces under the scheme.
The Council have supported this initiative over recent years and this year increased the amount of money to invest to £54,000. Now is the time for communities to come together to bid for improvements in their neighbourhoods.
Councillor Val Hopley, portfolio holder for Landlord Services, said: “We are looking for bright ideas that will make a difference and help transform communal areas. This will help make our neighbourhoods better places for tenants and everyone else who goes through those areas.”
The types of project that would be considered for funding include:
- Re-planting existing shrub beds or creating new shrub beds
- nstalling fencing to protect shrub beds and grassed areas
- Removing overgrown shrubs and trees that interfere with traffic site lines
- Soft landscaping to paved squares
- Funding partnership ‘clean up days’
- Improving play areas environmentally
